What is a WDT tool and what is it for

A WDT tool (Weiss Distribution Technique) is used to break up and evenly distribute ground coffee in the portafilter basket before brewing espresso. Thin needles or wires pass through the layer of coffee and break up clumps that form during grinding, especially with finer grinds or due to static electricity.

Why even distribution matters

If the ground coffee is poured into the basket unevenly or clumps remain in it, water will find the path of least resistance during extraction. Channels form through which water passes more quickly, while other parts of the coffee remain under-extracted. The result is unbalanced flavor, inconsistent flow time, and varying quality between shots even with the same grinder setting.

When to consider replacement

This is a tool with no moving mechanical parts, which wears mainly through bending or damage to the needles from improper handling. If the tips are deformed, bent, or breaking off, the tool stops penetrating the coffee layer evenly and its effectiveness drops significantly.
