Coffee machine not pumping water

When the machine doesn't draw water or the pump hums empty, the problem is usually the pump, air in the circuit or a blockage.

When the machine doesn't draw water, doesn't deliver it or the pump only hums empty, water isn't getting through the brew circuit. It's the opposite problem to a leak.

Most common causes

  • Worn or jammed pump
  • Air in the water circuit (air bubble)
  • Clogged valve or limescale-blocked thermoblock
  • Kinked or blocked hose

What to check first

  • Fill the tank to the mark and run a rinse or a hot-water draw
  • Try to bleed the air through the steam wand
  • Check the tank is properly seated

The pump hums but no water comes, why?

Humming means the pump is running but not pushing, either it's drawing air or it's scaled up. Fill the tank to the mark, run a hot-water draw and let it hum a little, the air bubble often clears. If even after bleeding the water won't come, the pump needs replacing, it costs a few tens of euros.

Is it the same as when the machine leaks?

The exact opposite. Here the water doesn't reach the outside at all, with a leak it escapes where it shouldn't. Don't mix them up when ordering the part, for no water it's the pump and valves, for a leak it's the gaskets and the valve.
