What is a portafilter basket

The basket (filter insert) is a metal insert placed into the coffee machine's portafilter, through which ground coffee is pressed and water extraction takes place under pressure. Its shape, depth and hole arrangement affect the even flow of water and, in turn, the quality of extraction and the taste of the resulting espresso.

How to spot wear

If the basket is old, damaged or clogged, it will show up as uneven coffee flow, dripping instead of a steady stream, holes clogged with residue, or leaks between the basket and the portafilter body. The result is often bitter, sour or watery coffee, and sometimes water leaking around the portafilter during extraction.

Why you shouldn't put off the replacement

A worn or deformed basket cannot maintain even pressure during brewing, leading to inconsistent results from cup to cup. Timely replacement restores proper water flow and stable extraction, regardless of how well the coffee is ground.
