What is a flow meter and what is it for

A flow meter is a component that measures the amount of water passing into the coffee machine during preparation of the drink. Based on its signal, the coffee machine's control electronics dose the precise amount of water for espresso, a longer coffee, or milk frothing. Without a properly functioning flow meter, the coffee machine cannot recognize how much water has already passed through.
