What is a portafilter filter basket and what does it do

A portafilter filter basket is a metal insert with many small holes, through which hot water flows under pressure through the ground coffee during espresso preparation. It determines how the water is distributed across the coffee bed, significantly affecting extraction and the resulting taste of the drink.

Typical signs of wear

• Uneven or too fast water flow through the coffee
• Water spraying outside the portafilter or running down its edge
• Changed, weaker or bitter taste of coffee compared to the usual result
• Clogged or deformed holes after prolonged use
