What is the portafilter and internal channel seal

This is a rubber or silicone seal that seals the joint between the portafilter and the brew head, or the internal channel through which hot water flows under pressure. Its job is to prevent water leakage and maintain the pressure needed for proper coffee extraction.

Typical signs of wear

• Water or steam leaking from under the portafilter during brewing
• Weaker or uneven flow, thin or watery coffee
• Hissing or increased noise when locking in the portafilter
• The portafilter sits looser in the head than before

Why timely replacement pays off

A worn or hardened seal loses elasticity and stops sealing even after the portafilter is tightened. This results in lower pressure, worse extraction, and in some cases damage to surrounding parts caused by leaking water.
