What a filter holder is and what it's for

The filter holder, also known as the portafilter, is a part of a lever/espresso machine into which the filter basket with ground coffee (or pods) is inserted. During preparation it is locked into the machine's brew head and keeps the coffee under the pressure of hot water, enabling proper espresso extraction.

Typical signs of wear

A worn or damaged filter holder most often shows up as water or coffee leaking from the sides, difficulty locking into the brew head or, conversely, too loose a fit, or a damaged spout that affects the shape and quality of the coffee stream. A worn or deformed filter basket and its seating lead to uneven extraction and poorer coffee taste.

Why you shouldn't put off the replacement

A leaking or damaged filter holder reduces the pressure needed for proper extraction and can cause hot water to escape outside the cup. Timely replacement prevents further wear of the brew head and keeps the quality of the prepared coffee consistent.
