What is a bottomless portafilter

A bottomless portafilter, also known as a naked portafilter, replaces a standard portafilter with one or two spouts. Instead of a closed bottom, it has an open base through which you can see the entire extraction process directly from the coffee puck into the cup.

Why it's worth using

The open design lets you watch how the coffee flows from the basket - an even stream indicates a properly prepared and tamped dose, while a sputtering or side stream (channeling) points to uneven coffee distribution or incorrect tamping. This feedback makes it easier to fine-tune the grind, dosing, and espresso brewing technique.

When to consider replacement or a spare

If the portafilter wears out, becomes loose in the group head, or its attachment gets damaged, water may leak from the sides or it may sit unstably during extraction. In that case, a new portafilter that fits securely and tightly into the espresso machine will help.
