What a tamper is used for

A tamper is a tool used to manually compress ground coffee in the portafilter basket before espresso extraction. Even and sufficiently firm pressing of the coffee bed ensures that water flowing through the coffee meets the same resistance across the entire surface, which is the foundation of a balanced extraction.

Signs of wear or an unsuitable tamper

A worn or uneven base, a loose handle, or an irregular surface can cause uneven tamping of the coffee. This results in channeling of water, an unbalanced espresso taste, a faster or uneven flow, and in some cases even coffee spraying from the portafilter.

When it's time for a replacement

A damaged or ill-fitting tamper makes precise and repeatable pressure application impossible, leading to inconsistent coffee taste between brews. A quality, undamaged tamper helps maintain a stable result with every espresso.
