What is a coffee distributor

A coffee distributor, also called a leveler, is a barista tool used to evenly spread ground coffee in the portafilter basket before tamping. Its purpose is to remove unevenness and lumps that occur during grinding and dosing, preparing the coffee bed for uniform tamping.

Why it matters

If the coffee in the basket is unevenly distributed, water will seek the path of least resistance during extraction. The result is often an unbalanced espresso taste, channeling, faster or uneven extraction, and less consistent results between preparations.

When to get a new one

Over time, a distributor can become scratched, deformed, or lose its flat surface, which leads to poorer coffee distribution even with correct technique. In that case, it's worth replacing it with a new one to keep your espresso preparation consistent.
