What is a tamper and what is it for

A tamper is a tool used to manually press ground coffee into the portafilter basket before espresso extraction. Even and sufficiently firm compression of the coffee puck is the foundation of correct, balanced extraction – without it, water flows through the coffee unevenly and the taste of the drink becomes inconsistent.

When the part stops doing its job

You can recognise an old or damaged tamper by cracks, a peeling surface, a loose handle, or an uneven base that can no longer create a flat surface on the coffee puck. This typically results in channelling, uneven extraction, sour or bitter-tasting espresso, and sometimes water leaking around the sides of the basket.

When it's time for a replacement

A damaged tamper cannot guarantee even pressure on the coffee, which directly affects the quality and consistency of the espresso's taste. Replacing it with a new one is a simple way to restore consistent brewing results without having to intervene in the coffee machine itself.
