What is a control knob and what is it for

The control knob is the part used to manually adjust a coffee machine's function, most often steam regulation or switching between operating modes. It is the element that mechanically operates a valve or switch inside the appliance, so it must sit firmly and precisely on its shaft.

How to spot wear

Over time, the knob can become loose, slip, or stick when turning, making it difficult to precisely set the steam or mode. Cracks, chipped edges, or a worn smooth surface prevent a firm grip and smooth operation. If the knob no longer holds firmly on the shaft or spins freely without effect, the adjustment stops working reliably.

When it's time for a replacement

A damaged or loose knob increases the risk of incorrect steam or function settings, which shows up in the quality of milk foaming or coffee extraction. A poorly fitted part can also put strain on the internal mechanism it is attached to.
