What the group head spring does

The spring is a part of the group head (brewing group) of the coffee machine and creates the tension needed to lock and hold the portafilter in place during coffee preparation. Without proper spring tension, the group head cannot maintain a tight and secure seal at the point where hot water pressure is applied.

Signs of wear

A worn or weakened spring shows itself through a handle that is either too stiff or too loose, leaks or dripping of water or coffee at the sides of the group head, or uneven pressure during extraction that affects the taste of the coffee. Unusual noise when opening or closing the handle can also occur.

When it's time for a replacement

A weak spring increases the risk of leaks and uneven brewing, which affects both coffee quality and the wear of other parts of the group head. Timely replacement prevents bigger failures and unnecessary strain on other components.
