What the valve seal does

The valve seal is a small rubber or silicone component that seals the joint between a movable or removable part of a valve, tap or connector and the body of the coffee machine. Its job is to prevent water, steam or pressure from leaking at the point where parts touch or screw together.

When the part stops doing its job

An old or hardened seal shows up as dripping or hissing around the valve, a drop in pressure, a stiffer lever or tap action, and in some cases even an error message related to pressure. Over time the material loses its elasticity, cracks or deforms due to heat and limescale.

When it's time for a replacement

A leaking valve increases water and energy consumption, can cause corrosion damage to nearby metal parts, and if neglected for too long leads to a bigger repair of the whole valve assembly. Replacing the seal is a simple and cheap way to avoid bigger problems.
