What is a steam or water knob

The steam and water knob is a control valve on a coffee machine used to manually open and close the supply of hot steam or hot water from the boiler. It is used to froth milk, heat beverages, or prepare tea and hot water directly from the nozzle.

How to spot wear

• Steam or water leaking even in the closed position
• Stiff, hard-to-turn lever, or conversely, too loose a movement
• Uneven or weak flow of steam or water
• Hissing, dripping, or visible limescale deposits around the knob

Why you shouldn't put off the replacement

A leaking or damaged knob unnecessarily releases steam or water, increases energy consumption, and can cause uneven milk frothing. Prolonged overloading of a worn mechanism can also damage surrounding joints and seals.
