What is a portafilter and what is it for

The portafilter, often also called the group handle, is the part into which the filter basket with ground coffee is inserted and which is then locked into the brew head of the coffee machine. Water passes through this connection under pressure to produce espresso, so the handle must hold the basket tightly and securely and fit snugly against the brew head.

Signs of wear

• Loose or wobbling filter basket in the portafilter
• Difficult or, conversely, too loose insertion into the brew head
• Water or coffee leaking around the edges during preparation
• Worn or damaged surface finish and handle

Why you shouldn't put off the replacement

A damaged or worn portafilter makes it harder to seal properly against the brew head, leading to water leaks, uneven extraction, and worse-tasting coffee. A loose basket can also fall out unexpectedly during handling.
