What is an O-ring seal

An O-ring is a small circular seal used in a coffee machine to seal joints between individual parts, for example on the spout, outlet nozzle, or in the circuit through which water, steam or milk flows. Its role is to prevent liquid or steam from leaking at the point where two parts join.

Typical signs of wear

As the material ages, the O-ring loses elasticity and may deform, crack or harden. The result is usually dripping or leaking water or steam from the joint, hissing during coffee preparation, or, conversely, a loss of pressure that shows up as weaker espresso or insufficiently frothed milk.

When it's time for a replacement

A damaged seal cannot be repaired, only replaced. Timely replacement prevents further liquid leakage, which could damage surrounding parts of the coffee machine, and maintains the stable pressure needed for proper coffee preparation.
