What a multifunctional valve is

The multifunctional valve is a part of a coffee machine's hydraulic system that regulates the flow of water and steam between the boiler, the milk-frothing nozzle and the coffee outlet. It combines several functions in a single housing that would otherwise be handled by separate components, so its correct operation is important for the smooth running of the whole appliance.

How to spot wear

A worn or clogged valve shows up as an irregular water flow, weak or fluctuating pressure during coffee preparation, water or steam leaking outside the usual paths, or a loud whistling noise. It is also common for the milk foam to be of poor quality, because the valve can no longer switch precisely between the different modes.

When it's time for a replacement

If the valve remains damaged for a longer period, it can lead to greater water leakage, damage to nearby seals, or the coffee machine ceasing to work altogether. Timely replacement prevents further consequential faults and keeps the quality of the brewed coffee and frothed milk stable.
