What is a coffee sifter

A sifter is a tool for sifting ground coffee that separates overly fine particles (dust) and coarser clumps from grounds of the desired size. It is mainly used when preparing espresso and filter coffee, where an even grind size significantly affects extraction and the taste of the drink.

Why sifting coffee improves the result

A grinder never produces a completely uniform grind – there is always a share of fine dust as well as larger particles. These extremes extract differently from the rest of the batch, resulting in bitterness, sourness, or an unbalanced taste in the cup. Sifting removes this unwanted fraction before brewing.

When to use a sifter

A sifter is especially useful when dialing in the optimal grinder setting, preparing for coffee competitions, or simply when you want to get the most consistent flavour out of your beans. The sifter's parts can usually be combined and swapped as needed.
