What a Hall sensor is and what it does

A Hall sensor is an electronic component that detects the presence of a magnetic field without direct contact, and uses it to determine the position or movement of a moving part of the mechanism. In a coffee machine, it can for example sense the rotation of a gear wheel, the position of a lever or sliding element, or the movement of a part of the dosing or grinding mechanism. Based on its signal, the control unit knows which phase of the cycle the machine is in, and accordingly starts or stops the individual steps of coffee preparation.

Signs of wear or failure

When the sensor stops working correctly, the coffee machine may display an error, get stuck mid-cycle, repeat the same step over and over, or fail to perform a step at all. Inconsistent brewing results are also common, since the machine no longer has accurate information about the position of the mechanism.

When it's time for a replacement

A faulty sensor feeds incorrect data to the control unit, which can lead to repeated faults in other parts of the mechanism as well. Timely replacement restores reliable operation and prevents further related problems.
