What is a grinding burr and what is it for

A grinding burr is a part of the coffee machine's grinder that grinds coffee beans to the desired coarseness. It works together with a matching counterpart, and together they grind the beans evenly, which is the basis for proper extraction and coffee flavour.

Typical signs of wear

• Uneven grind coarseness, small grains instead of fine powder
• Change in coffee taste, pronounced bitterness or, conversely, sourness
• Louder or slower operation of the grinder
• Higher coffee consumption for the same amount of drink
• Grinder overheating during longer grinding

When it's time for a replacement

A worn grinding burr loses the sharpness of its cutting edges, which puts strain on the grinder's motor and worsens the quality of coffee preparation regardless of how good the beans you use are. Timely replacement prevents further wear of surrounding parts and keeps the coffee taste consistent.
