What is a bottomless portafilter

A bottomless portafilter is a part of a lever espresso machine through which pressurized water flows through the prepared coffee directly into the cup during extraction. Without the bottom spout, it lets you watch the extraction live and quickly spot uneven grinding, poor tamping, or an incorrect dose.

Signs of wear

• Espresso sprays sideways or does not flow evenly, even though preparation is correct
• The filter basket or portafilter body sits loosely and moves during handling
• Increased noise when locking into the group head
• Water leaking around the edge during extraction

When it's time for a replacement

A worn or damaged portafilter affects pressure during extraction, which shows up in both the taste and consistency of the coffee. A deformed edge also makes cleaning harder and can speed up wear of the group head seal.
