What is a portafilter stand

A portafilter stand is a base where you rest the portafilter with the filter, and sometimes the tamper, between coffee preparations. It holds the portafilter in a stable position, protects the work surface from scratches, and prevents the filter from lying on its side, where the rim or basket could get damaged.

Why it pays to have a quality stand

Without a sturdy support, the portafilter is often set directly on the counter or in the sink, which increases the risk of damage to the surface and to the filter itself. A loose or unstable stand shifts, tips over, or fails to hold the weight of a filled portafilter, which is inconvenient during everyday coffee preparation.

When to consider a replacement

If the stand wobbles, cracks, loses its color or coating, or no longer reliably holds the portafilter or tamper in place, it's time to replace it with a new one. A damaged stand can cause the portafilter to fall and become deformed.
