What is a portafilter gasket

The portafilter gasket is a rubber or silicone ring located in the brew head of the coffee machine. Its job is to create a tight seal between the portafilter (handle) and the machine's head, so that pressurized water passes only through the ground coffee and not around it.

Signs of wear

An old or hardened gasket loses its flexibility and stops sealing properly. This shows up as water or coffee leaking around the sides of the handle, hissing or spitting during espresso preparation, a drop in pressure and uneven extraction, which affects the taste of the coffee. Sometimes, once the gasket is worn, the handle becomes harder to insert or sits looser than before.

Why you shouldn't put off the replacement

A leaking seal reduces the pressure needed for proper extraction and causes uneven, often bitter or sour espresso. Prolonged water leakage also puts strain on surrounding components and can lead to buildup and contamination of the brew head.
