What is the filter under the ESE pod and what is it for

This is a metal filter plate that is inserted into the portafilter and is designed for use together with an ESE pod. Its purpose is to hold the paper ESE pod in the correct position, evenly distribute water through the coffee, and guide the prepared espresso into the cup. Without a functional filter plate, water does not flow through evenly and coffee extraction becomes inconsistent.

When the part stops doing its job

A worn or damaged filter plate shows up as water leaking around the pod, thin or uneven espresso, cloudy sediment in the cup, or a change in coffee taste. Mechanical damage to the edges after prolonged use is also common, which prevents the pod from sealing properly in the portafilter.

When it's time for a replacement

A damaged filter plate reduces the quality of coffee preparation and can cause hot water to leak outside the cup. Timely replacement maintains stable extraction and protects other parts of the portafilter from unnecessary wear.
