What is a tamper mat

A tamper mat serves as a work surface when preparing coffee. It's where you place the portafilter while filling and tamping ground coffee, or where you rest the tamper itself between steps.

How to spot wear

A worn or damaged mat loses its non-slip properties, causing the portafilter to slide during tamping. A cracked or deformed surface can also leave coffee residue on the countertop or damage the bottom of the portafilter when set down.
