What is a competition filter for a moka pot

A competition filter is a modified basket that replaces the original filter in a moka pot. Thanks to its different design, it allows the use of more ground coffee and a finer grind, bringing the brew closer to espresso, with a stronger flavour and a denser foam (crema).

How wear on the original filter shows

Over time, the holes in the filter become clogged with coffee oils and residue, water flow slows down or, on the contrary, becomes uneven, the coffee tastes bitter or watery, and more coffee sediment appears in the cup. A damaged or corroded filter can also cause leaks and water escaping the correct path.

When it's time for a replacement

A new filter ensures even extraction and consistent coffee flavour with every brew. It also allows you to experiment with grind coarseness and coffee amount, which the original filter often does not allow.
