If the drip tray fills faster than usual or water seeps inside the machine, the most common cause is a leaking or limescale-clogged valve. Less often it's the brew unit that leaks.

Why does the drip tray fill up so fast?
Between brews the machine releases residual pressure through a valve, so a little water in the tray is normal. But if it overflows after just a few coffees, the valve no longer holds and lets water through all the time. On DeLonghi ECAM it's usually the expansion valve, on lever machines the check valve in the circuit.
Can I replace the valve myself?
Yes, it's one of the simplest repairs. You take off the back or side cover, the valve is clipped or screwed into the circuit and you swap it in a few minutes, a Phillips and a torx screwdriver are enough. It's only trickier on built-in models, where you have to remove more covers.
Is the repair worth it?
Absolutely. A valve costs a few tens of euros, a new brew unit or a workshop visit start much higher. If the machine otherwise brews well, replacing the valve puts it back in service.
