What is a portafilter filter basket and what it's used for

A filter basket is a perforated insert that fits into the portafilter and holds the ground coffee during espresso preparation. Pressurized water passes through its holes to form the resulting extraction – its condition determines both the evenness of extraction and the quality of the crema.

Typical signs of wear

Over time, the holes in the basket widen, clog, or become deformed due to pressure, heat, and cleaning. This shows up as uneven coffee flow, dripping instead of a steady stream, weaker or excessively fast extraction, a bitter or watery taste, and poor crema. A damaged basket can also cause ground coffee to leak underneath it or into the cup.
