The General Alarm message on DeLonghi machines means the machine detected an internal fault it can't name precisely. In practice, the temperature circuit is most often behind it.
Most common causes
- Faulty NTC temperature sensor (in practice the most common cause)
- Blown thermal fuse
- Faulty heating element or heating problem
- Less often a jammed brew unit or a full drip tray
What to check first
- Switch the machine off and unplug it
- Check and clean the drip tray, grounds container and tank
- After a few minutes turn it on, a reset sometimes clears the alarm

The reset didn't help, what next?
On DeLonghi, the General Alarm is in the vast majority of cases a faulty NTC temperature sensor, the machine doesn't get the right value and prefers to stop. Measure the sensor with a multimeter, at room temperature it should have a resistance roughly matching the model's datasheet, if it reads nonsense or infinity it needs replacing. Only then check the fuse and the element.
Does it affect a specific model?
It shows up across the ESAM, ECAM and EAM ranges. The more scaled up the machine, the sooner the sensor and heating circuit start raising the alarm, so regular descaling is the best prevention.
