What is a tamper and what is it used for

A tamper is a tool used to evenly and firmly press ground coffee into the portafilter basket before brewing espresso. Properly tamped and level coffee ensures an even flow of water through the entire layer of ground coffee, which is the foundation of quality extraction.

Signs of wear or an unsuitable tamper

If the tamper is scratched, deformed, or its shape no longer matches the basket, this will result in uneven tamping of the coffee. This leads to uneven extraction, sour or bitter-tasting coffee, channeling of water in the basket, and inconsistent espresso quality from cup to cup.

When it's time for a replacement

A damaged or ill-fitting tamper makes it impossible to apply even pressure across the entire surface of the ground coffee. Replacing it with a functional, properly shaped tamper restores consistent coffee preparation and prevents unnecessary coffee waste from repeated attempts to achieve a good result.
