Does your DeLonghi coffee machine squeak when brewing, make weak and watery pucks, or simply not taste like it used to? The problem is almost always a dirty or dry brew unit. Old coffee oils and residue gradually build up in the mechanism, leading to extraction problems and unpleasant noises. Cleaning and lubricating the brew unit is a simple maintenance task that takes about 10 minutes and requires no special tools.

When Is It Time to Clean the Brew Unit?

You should clean the brew unit regularly – ideally once every 1–2 weeks. This guide applies to all DeLonghi automatic coffee machines with a removable brew unit: ECAM (Magnifica S, Magnifica Evo, Dinamica, Eletta, PrimaDonna), ESAM, ETAM. Tieto príznaky ti prezradia, že je najvyšší čas:

Symptom Cause Solution
Coffee machine squeaks or grinds Dry gears in the brew unit Clean + lubricate with grease
Weak, watery or crumbling pucks Residue prevents proper compression of coffee Clean the unit under water
Káva nechutí dobre Staré kávové oleje v mechanizme Clean + soak for 5 min
Brew unit error code Unit too dirty or jams Clean, lubricate, check O-rings
Unit is difficult to remove or insert Accumulated residue in the mechanism Thorough cleaning + lubrication

💡 Tip: If you make more than 5 coffees a day, clean the brew unit once a week. For regular home use (2–3 coffees a day), once every two weeks is enough.

Step-by-Step Cleaning and Lubrication Procedure

Step 1: Remove the Brew Unit from the Coffee Machine

Turn off the coffee machine (let it complete the automatic rinsing cycle). Open the side panel on the inside of the coffee machine. You will see the brew unit with two red buttons (release levers). Press both red buttons inward and simultaneously pull the unit towards you – it will slide out of the coffee machine.

⚠️ Important: The coffee machine must be turned off (not just in standby). In standby mode, the piston is in the middle position and the unit cannot be removed. Turn off the machine using the button – let it complete the rinsing cycle and wait until it is completely off.

Step 2: Rinse the Unit Under Running Water

Hold the brew unit under running water and rinse it thoroughly from all sides. While rinsing, pohybuj piestom (plunger) hore a dole – this will loosen the remains of ground coffee and old coffee oils that build up inside the mechanism.

Never use soap, cleaning agents or chemical solvents. Clean water is enough.

Step 3: Soak the Unit for 5 Minutes

If the unit is very dirty (visible brown deposits, white coating), place it in a container with lukewarm water and let it soak for 5 minutes. Then rinse it again under running water. Finally, dry it thoroughly with a clean cloth or let it air dry.

Step 4: Lubricate the Gears with Food Grade Grease

This step is only needed if the coffee machine squeaks or grinds – it is not necessary to do it with every cleaning. On the side of the brew unit you will find gears and on the opposite side the shaft. Apply a thin layer of food grade grease. Then move the piston up and down to work the lubricant evenly into the mechanism.

Use only food grade grease. Regular lubricants are not safe for food contact. Apply the lubricant sparingly – too much grease on the vertical shaft can actually cause more resistance. Bežné mazivá nie sú bezpečné pre kontakt s potravinami. Nanášaj mazivo šetrne – priveľa maziva na zvislom hriadeli môže naopak spôsobiť väčší odpor.

Step 5: Insert the Unit Back into the Coffee Machine

Check that the piston moves smoothly and without resistance. Insert the brew unit back into the coffee machine – push it in until you hear a click. Close the side panel, replace the water tank and turn on the coffee machine. Prepare 1–2 cups of coffee to verify that everything works properly. cvaknutie. Troubleshooting

If you still have problems after cleaning and lubricating the brew unit, check the following:

Coffee machine still squeaks after lubrication

Check if you applied the lubricant to the correct places – gears and shaft. If the squeaking persists, the O-rings on the brew unit may be worn and need replacing. Check if they are cracked or deformed.

Weak or crumbling pucks after cleaning

If the pucks are still watery and crumbling, the problem may be worn seals on the brew unit. Check the upper piston – if the seal is worn or deformed, the coffee cannot maintain proper pressure. In that case, consider a new brew unit.

Coffee machine makes very thin (anorexic) pucks

Thin pucks without volume mean that the brew unit cannot properly compress the coffee. The cause is usually a worn piston mechanism or a dirty inner cylinder. Thorough cleaning usually helps – if not, the unit needs to be replaced.

Brew unit cannot be removed

Make sure the coffee machine is turned off (not just in standby mode). The coffee machine must go through the automatic rinsing cycle before turning off – then the piston returns to the correct position and the unit can be removed.

Brew unit cannot be inserted back

The piston must be in the lower (pressed) position. If it is not, press it down manually before inserting. Also check if there are residues or foreign objects in the brew unit shaft that prevent proper insertion.

⚠️ Important: If problems persist after thorough cleaning and lubrication, the brew unit is probably worn and needs to be replaced. Repairing a worn unit is a waste of time – a new unit will solve the problem immediately.

Do's and Don'ts

✅ Do ❌ Don't
Clean the brew unit once every 1–2 weeks under water Never use soap or chemical cleaners
Move the piston during rinsing Do not put the brew unit in the dishwasher
Use only food grade grease Nepoužívať bežné mazivá (WD-40 a pod.)
Mazať len prevody a hriadeľ (keď vŕzga) Nenanášať priveľa maziva na zvislý hriadeľ
Let the unit dry thoroughly before reinserting Do not insert a wet unit into the coffee machine

Where to Buy Spare Parts for the DeLonghi Brew Unit

Depending on the type of problem, you will need one or more of the following parts. All are compatible with the entire DeLonghi ECAM, ESAM and ETAM series:

Spare Part When You Need It Approximate Price
Food grade grease for the brew unit Preventive maintenance, squeaking 3–8 €
DeLonghi brew unit Worn seals, weak pucks, non-functional piston 40–70 €

💡 Tip: If you are not sure which part you need, find the model number on the label inside the service door of the coffee machine (e.g. ECAM 350.75.S or ECAM 23.460.B). With this number, we can advise you exactly.

Conclusion

Cleaning and lubricating the brew unit is the most important maintenance you can do for your DeLonghi coffee machine. It takes 10 minutes, costs almost nothing and can solve most common problems – from squeaking to weak pucks to error codes. Regular cleaning (once every 1–2 weeks) will extend the life of your coffee machine by years.

If cleaning and lubrication does not help, the brew unit is worn and needs to be replaced. It is still cheaper than a new coffee machine – and the replacement takes less than a minute.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my DeLonghi coffee machine squeak when brewing?

Squeaking is caused by dry gears in the brew unit. You can fix it by cleaning and lubricating the brew unit with food grade grease. Apply the lubricant to the gears and shaft, then work it in by moving the piston.

How often should the DeLonghi brew unit be cleaned?

We recommend cleaning under running water at least once every 1–2 weeks. Lubricating the gears is only necessary when you hear squeaking – usually once every few months.

Why does the DeLonghi coffee machine make weak or watery pucks?

Weak, watery or crumbling coffee pucks are a sign of a dirty brew unit. Old coffee oils and residue prevent proper compression of the coffee. After cleaning the unit, the puck quality should improve. If not, the seals are worn and the unit needs to be replaced.

Can I use soap to clean the brew unit?

No. Never use soap, cleaning agents or chemical solvents to clean the brew unit. Running water and optionally soaking in lukewarm water for 5 minutes is sufficient.

What lubricant to use for the DeLonghi brew unit?

Always use only food grade grease designed for coffee machines. Regular lubricants like WD-40 are not safe for food contact and can damage the seals. vhodnú potravinársku vazelínu.
