Gasket

Seals (Gasket) in coffee machines
Seals are critical components responsible for creating watertight and vapor-tight joints between all the major nodes of a coffee machine. Without properly functioning gaskets, the optimum pressure of 9 bar required for quality espresso extraction cannot be maintained and the entire hydraulic system loses its efficiency.

Seal Types by Location
The group head gasket secures the connection between the portafilter and the brew group, the piston seals in the brew unit maintain pressure during coffee compression, the thermoblock seals prevent hot water leaks, and the pump gaskets protect the motor from water damage.

Material Features
High-quality coffee gaskets are made from EPDM rubber or silicone to withstand temperatures up to 150°C, chemical corrosion from descaling agents, and repeated warping. FDA-certified materials ensure food safety and do not overwhelm coffee flavors.

Seal wear indicators
Signs of damaged gaskets include visible water or steam leaks during operation, drop in extraction pressure, uneven coffee flow, moisture around joints, seal cracks or deformations, and increased pump noise due to cavitation.

Durability and Replacement Intervals
Head gaskets require replacement every 9-12 months under heavy use, piston gaskets last 12-18 months, while pump gaskets can last 2-3 years. Factors such as water quality, descaling frequency and operating temperature significantly affect service life.

Gasket Replacement Procedure
Replacement requires disassembly of the appropriate assembly, thorough cleaning of the grooves of old debris and deposits, application of a thin layer of food grade silicone grease to the new gasket, and accurate fitting according to the guide marks. Incorrect assembly can damage the gasket on first use.

Preventive Maintenance
Regular lubrication of moving gaskets with silicone grease will extend their life up to twice as long. Avoid aggressive cleaners that can damage the rubber structure. Using high quality filtered water reduces the abrasive effect of mineral particles.

Compatibility and Selection
Exact dimensional matching is key when selecting replacement gaskets - inside diameter, outside diameter and thickness must match the original specifications exactly. Universal gaskets may be a temporary solution, but original parts guarantee long-term reliability and optimal system performance.
