What is a portafilter spout and what is it for

The portafilter spout is a metal part attached to the bottom of the portafilter, through which the brewed espresso flows from the filter basket directly into the cup. It directs the flow of coffee and splits it into one or two streams depending on the number of servings the spout is designed for.

How to spot wear

Over time, coffee oils and limescale build up inside the spout, changing the way the coffee flows. This can show up as an uneven, splashing, or sideways-dripping stream, dripping after extraction has finished, or a change in the taste of the espresso caused by residues of old coffee. If the thread is damaged or the part is mechanically worn, the spout may also sit loosely on the portafilter and come off.

Why timely replacement pays off

A malfunctioning spout affects both the quality of extraction and the appearance of the coffee in the cup, and a dirty part is a source of yellowing and odour. Replacing it with a new part restores a smooth, even flow without affecting the rest of the portafilter.
