What is an O-ring and what is it for

An O-ring is a small circular seal used in a coffee machine in dozens of places – in the hydraulic circuit, on pistons, valves, nozzles, hose connections or in the steam wand. Its job is to seal the joint between two parts so that water, steam or pressure cannot escape through it.

Typical signs of wear

Over time it loses elasticity, hardens or cracks. This shows up as water or steam leaking around the joint, dripping under the machine, a drop in pressure when brewing coffee, or hissing and humming when steam flows through. Sometimes wear even affects the taste of the coffee, when the leak alters the extraction pressure.

When it's time for a replacement

A damaged O-ring may look like a minor detail, but a long-term leak of water or steam can damage surrounding parts and reduce the coffee machine's performance. Replacement is a quick and cheap fix that prevents bigger problems.

• The key factor is size – the diameter and thickness of the ring, or the material stated with the product.
