Most Common DeLonghi Faults (Dinamica / Primadonna / Eletta) and How to Fix Them

1. Coffee won't dispense

The most common fault. The pump runs, the grinder grinds the beans, but nothing comes out into the cup or only a thin trickle of water.

Cause #1 — limescale in the circuit. The water circuit is clogged with limescale and the pressure isn't enough to push through the brew unit. Solution: run two consecutive descaling cycles with genuine DeLonghi ECODECALK 500ml. After the second cycle, flush with 4–5 cups of clean water.

Cause #2 — worn mechanical valve. If descaling didn't help, the problem is a worn mechanical valve (piston). Replace it with a mechanical valve / piston for Eletta Explore — the same part fits most Dinamica and Primadonna models.

2. General alarm

Medium-difficulty fault. A red warning lights up on the display, the machine doesn't respond or shuts down right after starting.

The cause can be anything from a faulty mainboard through thermostats to the NTC sensor — but in practice, in 80% of cases it's a faulty NTC sensor on the steam boiler. This sensor measures temperature and when it fails, the mainboard treats it as a critical fault.

Solution: replace the NTC sensor for DeLonghi coffee machines. The replacement takes 20 minutes and is inexpensive.

If the alarm persists after the NTC sensor swap, check in this order: thermostat, water sensor, and only as a last resort the mainboard.

3. Weak / poor coffee taste

Depends on grinder behaviour. Open the bean hopper and listen to the machine while brewing.

Grinder runs only briefly (1–2 seconds). The coffee is weak because too little bean was ground. The cause is faulty power electronics — replace it with a genuine board and the problem is gone.

Grinder runs 5+ seconds but coffee is still weak. The grinder is worn — the ceramic burrs no longer grind the beans to the right fineness. Solution: complete replacement with a complete coffee grinder 230V for DeLonghi ECAM coffee machines.

Grinder runs correctly but coffee is still weak. The brew unit is clogged. Remove it, rinse under running water, lubricate the O-rings with silicone grease. If the piston doesn't move, replace the unit with a DeLonghi brew unit ECAM and ETAM.

4. Leaks from the left side

Specific but well-known fault. Water drips from underneath the machine, mostly from the left side, during brewing or even at idle.

The cause is a deformed thermoblock cover. Repeated heating to high temperatures expands the plastic and the seal stops sealing. The groove originally sealed with silicone fails.

Solution:

1. Replace the thermoblock cover for DeLonghi ECAM coffee machines with a new one.
2. Re-seal the groove with silicone rated for at least 92°C. Standard household silicone won't survive — it dissolves within weeks.
3. Let the silicone cure for at least 24 hours before powering the machine on.

5. Won't froth milk

Hardest to diagnose — there are several possible causes: faulty 3-way electromagnetic valve, broken IFD connector, deformed milk container, faulty thermostats or mainboard. Work from the most common cause first.

Most common (~70% of cases): faulty 3-way electromagnetic valve. This valve switches the steam direction between the coffee and milk circuits. Replace it with a three-way electromagnetic valve for DeLonghi ECAM coffee machines.

If the valve doesn't fix it, check in this order:

• IFD connector (metal tube in the frother) — clear the small orifice
• Milk container — check for cracks or deformation
• Thermostats on the steam boiler — measure with a multimeter
• Mainboard — last resort, expensive replacement
