What is a water distributor and what is it for

The water distributor, also known as a diffuser or dispersion plate, is a part of the coffee machine's brewing unit. Its job is to disperse the stream of hot water coming from the boiler or thermoblock so that it evenly soaks the entire surface of the ground coffee. This allows water to pass through the puck evenly, ensuring balanced extraction across the whole cross-section.

Signs of wear

A worn or clogged distributor causes uneven extraction, resulting in sour or, conversely, burnt-tasting coffee. Channeling in the puck, water leaking around the edges of the brewing unit, extended brewing time, or conversely too fast a water flow are also common. Limescale deposits or microcracks on the surface make this problem even worse.

When it's time for a replacement

A damaged distributor cannot be fixed by cleaning indefinitely; over time it stops performing its function evenly. Replacing it with a new part restores proper water distribution, improves consistency of coffee taste between brews, and reduces the risk of overloading the seal around the brew head.
