What is a shower screen and what does it do

The shower screen is a part of the coffee machine's brew head through which hot water passes just before reaching the coffee puck. Its role is to evenly distribute the flow of water across the entire surface of the ground coffee, so that extraction happens uniformly and the espresso's flavour stays balanced.

When the part stops doing its job

A clogged or damaged screen can be recognised by an uneven, channelled flow of water, sour or bitter tasting coffee, an extraction that runs too slow or too fast, or visible limescale and coffee oil deposits on the surface. In some cases, leaking may also appear between the shower and the brew head.

Why timely replacement pays off

A worn or deformed screen cannot always be cleaned back to its original state, and its tiny holes gradually widen or clog unevenly over time. This leads to persistent inconsistency in extraction, no matter how good the coffee you use is. Timely replacement restores even water distribution and a stable taste.

How to choose the right screen
