What is a precision filter (basket) for the portafilter

The precision filter, also called a basket, is a metal insert placed into the portafilter of an espresso machine. Its job is to hold the ground coffee in place and evenly distribute the pressure of hot water through it, producing espresso with proper extraction and a nice crema.

Typical signs of wear

An old or damaged filter can be recognised by uneven or too-fast water flow, coffee that tastes sour or bitter, weak or missing crema, or coffee grounds leaking into the cup. Clogged or deformed holes prevent even extraction and change both the taste and appearance of the drink.
