What is a knockbox and what is it for

A knockbox is a container for knocking out used coffee grounds from a filter or portafilter. It consists of a sturdy container and a metal bar across it, against which the grounds are knocked out in one motion, without spilling over the work surface.

Signs of wear

• A knocked out or loose bar that wobbles or falls out of its mount on impact
• Dents and cracks in the body of the container that impair tightness or stability
• Damaged rubber insert on the bar, causing a louder impact and faster wear of the portafilter
• Corroded or stained surface despite regular cleaning

Why you shouldn't put off the replacement

A damaged knockbox increases the risk of scratching or deforming the rim of the portafilter with every knock-out and reduces safety when working at the counter. A loose bar can fall off completely on a stronger impact, slowing down preparation and increasing mess around the espresso machine.
