What is the filter under the ESE pod and what is it for

This is a metal filter plate that is inserted into the portafilter and is designed for use together with an ESE pod. Its purpose is to hold the paper ESE pod in the correct position, evenly distribute water through the coffee, and guide the prepared espresso into the cup. Without a functional filter plate, water does not flow through evenly and coffee extraction becomes inconsistent.
