What the steam/hot water valve knob does

The knob is the control element used to open and close the steam or hot water valve on a coffee machine. It fits onto the valve shaft and is used to turn it manually when frothing milk or dispensing hot water.

Signs of wear

• The knob spins freely and does not transfer force to the valve shaft
• It is cracked, broken, or missing part of the gripping surface
• It is hard to grip due to a worn or smoothed-out surface
• It cannot be reliably tightened to fully close the valve

Why you shouldn't put off the replacement

A damaged or loose knob makes precise control of steam or water flow difficult and increases the risk of scalding when working with hot media. If the valve cannot be reliably tightened, leaking or steam escaping even when not in use can occur.
