What a flat EPDM gasket is

This is a flat gasket made of EPDM rubber, used in the coffee machine to seal joints between metal and plastic parts – for example in the water supply, steam line, or milk system. Its purpose is to prevent liquid or steam from leaking at the point where two parts connect.
